As time permits in the office, a few tasks can be done ahead of time to save time on the ship.

  • Prepare mug photo Headshot templates.
  • Prepare the caption ID participants list.
  • Prepare the group photo templates.
  • Prepare the captions documents (as a template) for each week of the expedition.
  • Prepare the metadata template for Bridge (cumulusMerlinOne).

II. PORT CALL - Start of an Expedition

  • Shoot Mug shots Headshots of scientists and marine specialists, usually after one of the first meetings. Post and distribute mug shot contact sheets as soon as possible but before the end of port call. The mug shots headshots are critical to help the scientists, techs, and crew get to know eachothereach other.
  • Assist in making IDs for scientists and IODP staff (if needed).
  • Take mug shots of new SIEM/Entier personnel – produce poster before port call ends.
  • PR Images as required, assist with PR tours as required.

III. SITE PREPARATION - Prior to arrival on site and core on deck

  • Give the photo policy talk to scientists, this covers current core and close up photography policy.
  • Meet with microscope users and find out how they would like the microscopes configured and configure them appropriately.
  • Check calibration of the core image scanner.SHIL
  • Provide training to scientists on microscope usage (including microscope camera) and data upload/download procedures
  • Provide safety tour to all scientists working in the microscope area. Ensure scientists understand all safety concern.
  • Assist in core lab preparation according to the Core Lab SOP

  • Download all images from imaging track and check for accuracy of information, missing images, and image quality. Perform this duty 2-3 times a shift depending on core flow and bring any issues to the attention of the core lab staff routinely.
  • Shoot requested close-ups daily and post on server.
  • Shoot or assist taking PICAT images of Thin Section slides, daily if applicable.
  • Check in with paleo scientist occasionally to make sure all microscopes are functioning correctly.
  • Monitor the microscope users for issues and procedure in acquiring and uploading images.
  • If available, assist in core processing according to Core Lab SOP.

V. DURING TRANSITS

  • Continue processing cores through the lab as described above
