Method 1: ASCII bathymetry

  1. Create an ASCII file into an X,Y,Z column of the data in Excel (Make the 1st row as the 1st line of data). Save it as "Text tab delimited".
  2. In Petrel, create a generic folder and import this file to PETREL using "general lines/points".
  3. The pop-up import window of PETREL will appear. Select "points" (and for bathymetry data make sure to activate "PETREL usually has negative in Z"). At this stage, your bathymetry data is still in points with attributes of X, Y and Z information.
  4. On the processes panes of PETREL or "Seismic Interpretation" ribbon, click "Make/edit surface" and put this points data as an input (Click the data on the input panes and click blue arrow at pop up window of this processes). On the "Suggest settings from input" option, choose "well tops/points (high density)". On the "geometry" setting - "grid size and position", choose "automatic from input data" and type the resolution of the bathymetry data on the "Grid increment" (See the acquisition and processing report). In addition, you can "keep as it is" for other setting on this processes. Click "Ok".
  5. Your bathymetry data is now in 3D (surface), you can visualize it on the 3D window of PETREL (If you are not toggled-on this option at the previous processes). Some surface attributes and surface editing (activate PETREL tools palette - surface editing) are also available in PETREL if you need to processes this 3D bathymetry surface.
  6. You can also overlay and blend this 3D bathymetry surface with other data in PETREL (e.g., magnetic, seabed classification, etc.)
