Welcome

Shipboard paleomagnetists conduct paleomagnetic and rock magnetic measurements of recovered rocks and sediment to construct a magnetostratigraphy for each site and to examine its paleomagnetic and tectonic history. Typically, measurements are conducted on the archive half of each core with the superconducting cryogenic rock magnetometer (SRM), although measurements are ceased if data quality are poor. Discrete samples (8 cc paleomagnetic cubes) are taken from the working half of cores for additional measurements. We will discuss a shipboard sampling scheme prior to arriving at our first site.
